I do feel one needs to be in the presence of Emyr’s work to fully appreciate the superb quality of the way he applies paint. On film and in some of the photographs the linear elements seem quite dominant, and though the potent colour stands up against them really well, I do feel drawn to ‘This Way Up’ which for me, seems to integrate the two more satisfyingly. Also some of the lines are a little scumbled and less fluid and regular thereby allowing other colours through.
A very powerful set of paintings though.
